Updated Rules and Guidelines for Round 3
How To Play

The aim of the game is to win; I think everyone has got that sorted. But Mafia can be complex to understand, particularly if you're learning to play before your first round starts. So I thought I'd post some info on what you signed up for.

In the game, there are two sides: Assassins and Innocents. Say if 40 people signed up, then 10 would be assassins, and 30 would be innocents. The ratio sound unfair, but the games usually get very close, so you'll see how having so few people isn't really a disadvantage.

The group of assassins - and the innocents don't know who they are - will choose an innocent to kill each night. When the deadline comes, I'll post the front cover of the Mafia Mail, with the information of who the assassins selected to kill. The innocents (and the assassins masquerading as innocents) will have 12 hours - the day time - to discuss the murder, and decide who they think is an assassin. The decision doesn't have to be unanimous - you each vote individually, and the majority wins.

Then it goes back to night time, and the assassins gather again, and discuss who they want to kill. The assassins will generally kill those they feel are good at figuring out who assassins are, or who they feel are dangerous in other ways. That brings me to my next point: The special roles (which, by the way, have been added to this round) are as follows:

Innocents: The innocents have five roles, or though some of these have more than one of the same type.

Mason: There are three masons, who know who eachother are, and communicate via a free chat that I will set up for them.
They have power because they know there are two other people that they can trust.

Seer: There are two seers. These have the power to see through the exterior of a player, and find out if they have any hidden secrets (In other words, I will post an entry in my journal, where the seers have the oportunity to ask  if someone has a special role. I will reply in a PM). If they ask about a mason, and discover his/her role, they can PM the mason they've discovered, and the mason will ask me for confirmation that the person that PMed me was actually a seer, and I will provide the password to the seer who asked, thus making them a mason.

Vigilante: There is one vigilante, who is in the possesion of two bullets, one lethal injection, and one poison dart. He or She can use these to kill a person they suspect of being an assassin. The vigilante will kill by commenting in my journal (Please note the weapons listed cannot be reused). S/he can PM me if contacted by a seer who says they asked about them.

Healer: One healer, and he or she can heal as many times as s/he wants, although s/he can only heal his/her self once. The healer will protect someone from execution or assassination. Protection lasts for twentyfour hours.

Vengeance Demon: Though on the side of the innocents, the vengeance demon can be dangerous to either side. If executed, an innocent will die. If assassinated, an assassin will die. If killed by the vigilante, the vigilante dies. The reason for the name is that the demon will seek revenge on the side that distroyed him/her. (Please note, the demon also dies).

Assassins: The assassins have three special roles this round, as opposed to two, which is what they had last time.

Godfather: If the seer asks about the godfather, he/she will be told he/she is innocent.

Dentist: The dentist can select anyone to silence on any night. Silencing means that the person silenced can only communicate through gifs and images (of their chosen character only). He/she cannot vote either. The dentist can not silence the same person twice in a row, and can silence three people for a second time.

: The cupid can make two sets of two people fall in life consuming love. When one of the couple dies, the other dies twenty four hours later from a broken heart. Please note this is not limited to opposite gender. When a couple are bonded, they are given the same protection as they would recieve from the healer for 24 hours. The first arrow must be used within 5 days. The second arrow can be used whenever you want, but it has to include at least on assassin.

Additional Info

Four days into the battle, the assassins have the oportunity to convert an innocent of their choice to assassinhood. If this innocent has a special role, they will keep this role - eg, if the victim is a seer, then s/he will still be able to ask about innocent roles, and still be in the mason chat.

When a person is silenced, various restrictions are in place. A seer cannot ask about roles, a healer cannot heal, a vigilante cannot kill, a cupid cannot bond and masons and assassins are only allowed to link to images on chatzy.

People linger as ghosts. Innocents linger for two days after the time of their death, Assasins linger one. Assassins are allowed to stay on chat until the end of the battle, as are Masons.

Although I've never been a victim of it myself, I know how bad it sucks being the first to die. So, the first four people to die, whether innocent or otherwise, are allowed to linger for three days.

No excessive swearing. But we all know something slips out occasionally.
No bashing of players or moderators (me)
No inappropriate sexual content
Enjoy yourself
Roleplay (optional. but you have characters for a reason)

Deadline for Assassins, seers, viglantes, healers and cupids: 6pm GMT
Execution (voting) post: 6pm GMT
Vote Tally: 6am GMT

Please note that GMT means the original time, not taking into account the Daylight Savings Time that is currently in effect in England. Basically, If you are in england, 6pm GMT wouldd be 7pm, because DST is in effect. I will also have to change the times when DST changes, because of the unfortunate invention of the bus.
I'll alert you when that happens. The times will only go back one hour.

I know how much of a problem inactives are. But I also know how much it sucks to have all the inactives one one side, and lose half your teammates. I let it be known that I will deal with inactives this round, but I've devised a way to stop most of the inactives being assasigned roles - I hope.

When the application post is closed, I will post another entry, where you have to sign in. This will be open for 24 hours. You have to confirm you're existence, basically. It takes five seconds, but will eliminate a lot of trouble. At the end of the 24 hours, I'll assign roles to those present, and we will begin. Anyone who doesnt turn up 4 days in a row later in the game will be killed by the power of MOD. (lol)

Do the lovers know that they're assigned that role, or do they not find out until they die?

Maybe a dumb question, but curious. ;P

Re: Questions or Clarfications:
They don't find out until the first one dies (if they do). Then the name of the one left alive is revealed, but healing is useless, because it doesnt protect against extreme psycological distress.

Re: Questions or Clarfications:
I have a question regarding the pictures when silenced. The character I'm playing has only been on TV for one ten-episode season. Is it acceptable to use pictures of the actress in different roles if I need to?
Jane, Judas Iscariotjanevampyr on October 20th, 2010 08:24 pm (UTC)
Re: Questions or Clarfications:
Erm, well, not technically. But I'm pretty flexible, so yeah. Any pictures of the actress, whatever role she's playing is fine. what isnt is excessive text on the picture.

Basically 'BAMF' is fine. an explicit description of a battle plan is not

Re: Questions or Clarfications:
Oh, I'm perfectly okay with no text - that's only fair, since you're silenced, LOL. Text on the pictures would strike me as cheating. I don't *think* I'll need to use anything else, but I wanted to check, in case I should need to resort to using some shots of Sasha from NCIS or something.

Thanks!!! *is excited to start*

Re: Questions or Clarfications:
No problem. Also, I should probaly add this to the original post. If someone is a special, the silencing stops them from doing whatever they do, because it involves speaking. Ie, the seer cannot ask about a player when silenced.

Re: Questions or Clarfications:
Hmm, as far as the "no text" goes, what about on gifs? Usually, the text there isn't very telling, but it does work well, if, say, one wanted to express some dissatisfaction with what was happening on a particular day.

Like, oh, say, one of my particularly favorite ones.

Okay, am new to livejournal
First, I want to thank you a ton for setting this up. This is my ideal game (though it will bother me if I am killed early), cuz I love using cunning. So, once again, thanx.
Second, I don't really know what to do. Found this threw dark-princess17.livejournal.com, and so created an account solely for this. How do you apply, chat, meet other people, ect?
Please, not even janevampyr, could someone please reply, I think this will be epic.

From what I understand regarding the inactive rule: After the application post is closed, you will open up the sign-in post. People who sign in there during the next 24 hours will be randomized for possible roles. People who don't sign in there will be "regular" innocents. Mafia will then start. If someone then doesn't show up for 4 days in a row (whether or not they signed in), he/she will be killed off. Is this correct?

If so, will the sign-in post be screened comments so that we don't see who did not sign in/is a "regular" innocent?

Also, regarding the cupid: Is this a power just used at the beginning of the game? (This is what was done in the Legendland game where I saw the cupid used.) If not, is it limited to when it can be used? It would suck to have the cupid wait until 3/4 of the way through and assign the couples such that the innocents are basically cut in half right at the end.

Regarding being silenced by the dentist: Is there a rule that there can be no writing on the pictures? And out of curiosity, why the rules for no non-character pictures and only silencing people twice? I have rarely seen people silenced more than twice (me, silenced three times last round at JJverse, which sucked!), but I don't understand why it would be limited.

Regarding the seers: Does this mean they are more like psychics? So they will know if someone is a healer, a cupid, a vengeance demon, etc.? And, out of curiosity, why would you make the seer a mason? the seer is already one of (if not the) most powerful people in the game. Why would he/she also get the advantage of being a mason? That makes it A) harder for the assassins to kill the seer, as they really won't be able to manipulate others into executing him/her and/or making him/her look suspicious enough to be vigilanted and B) Makes the 10 night limit superfluous, as they will get 3/4 innocents (all of the masons, plus potentially the other seer) for the price of one. I'd be much more willing to let the seers have unlimited choices than to let that happen. I really, really, really don't like that rule and would like clarification.

Jane, Judas Iscariot: sidvisjanevampyr on October 18th, 2010 06:52 am (UTC)
NO, those who don't sign up will not be allowed to play. that way, hopefully eliminating those that cant be bothered to turn up twice.

The cupid cant kill the couple instantly - s/he has to wait 24 hours, but i hadn't thought of that. I might make the first arrow within the first week or something. what do you sugest?

The non-character picture rule has been in place since round 1, but it wasn't policed properly. those that come from books ect, can ask me for a replacement (like mrsjackturner in round 1). and only silencing twice - thats just a kind of technicality, than an actual rule; it just stops abuse of a player by repeatedly silencing them until the end of the game.

Yes, i guess they are more like psychics. The reason i would make the seer a mason is due to the fact i've never played in a game where the innocents win, so i thought maybe our rules werent fair, so i gave the innocents a bit of a kick.

And ok, I'll take out the 'ten questions' bit
meredith44: R&I Janemeredith44 on October 18th, 2010 05:15 pm (UTC)
Ah, okay.

Oh, I knew it wasn't right away. However, if you let the cupid wait, he can look a few days to see who are the most active, and pair two most active with two most likely to be killed. Or, if they wait 7 days, assuming assassins and innocents kill both nights, that is like half the pool gone. Eliminating 4 innocents at that point would be devastating to them, even if it was spread out over time. It is a definite huge advantage to the assassins.

When the cupid was used at legendland, it was a random innocent who got the power and they picked before the game started. The cupid ended up pairing me (an assassin) with an innocent.

However, as you have a pair of really powerful seers (see below), maybe it would be good to have a really powerful assassin to balance them out.

Ah. At JJverse, I was able to use other pictures to get my point across as long as there was no writing on them. I am fine with the character only rule. The only thing I really care that much about is the writing, as that can get ridiculous. :) And, I understand the not wanting to be silenced a lot. At JJverse, the assassins couldn't kill me because the healer was protecting me, so I was silenced every other day. (Hence the creative use of pictures linked above! :D )

Innocents can win. They won in the last round at JJverse, in the round before it at JJverse, and in the last round at scifiland. Even here, the innocents would have won last round if A) people hadn't been inactive and/or B) I'd vigilanted Zoe instead of Lucy. I think the seer=mason rule way overbalances in favor of the innocents, but I'm willing to give it a try and see how it goes.

And if you're going to keep the seer as mason, I'm totally fine with limiting the seers powers. Or even just having one seer. Or having one seer and one psychic. Although considering the length of games, 10 questions would probably be mostly unlimited anyway. Especially if the seers meet up in mason chat and can pool their resources with the masons.

Just giving you my input. Feel free to do with it what you will. (Obviously.)
Jane, Judas Iscariotjanevampyr on October 18th, 2010 07:05 pm (UTC)
The cupid can also use the bonding as a healing tool, which is why i was going to let them keep one of the arrows as long as they wanted. You see, if one of them is in danger of execution, then they can bond them with an innocent, and make use of the protection for 24 hours.

And I know the innocents can win; i was reffering specifically to the rules we have here, where the innocents have never won. I'm not trying to make either side win, just make it an even playing field.

The seer to mason rule, i think, is balanced by the cupid.

This is the first time that I play mafialair. I still don't know 100 % how it works but I guess I'll figure it out while playing. At least I know the basic rules - when I was a kid we used to play a similar games at children's birthdays and it was a lota fun :D.
